QuickBooks provides methods to get rid of accounts from your Customer file, but how you do so depends on the type of account you want to remove. You can remove an account from your Chart of Accounts by merging it with another account, hiding it or deleting it altogether. In addition, you can remove a customer or job as well as a vendor account, unless you have used them in a transaction or they have an open balance. In that case, you can simply hide the account.
Chart of Accounts
1.
Select the 'Lists' menu and click 'Chart of Accounts.' Make sure both accounts are at the same level in your list hierarchy if you are merging two accounts.
2.
Click the account you want to remove. Select the accounts you want to merge if you are opting to merge two accounts.
3.
Click the 'Account' drop-down button. Select 'Delete' to delete the account. Choose 'Make Account Inactive' to hide the account. Choose 'Edit,' change the name of the account you want to remove to the one you want to merge it with and click 'Save & Close' to merge accounts.
Customer
1.
Select 'Customer Center' and choose the 'Customers & Jobs' tab. Double-click the customer you want to remove to open the Edit menu.

3.

Vendor
